A Week of Breakfast Smoothies + Recipes

Summer is practically here!

What a perfect time to be making smoothies! I grew up drinking them for breakfast or as a healthy snack. I kept making them as I got older and now that I have a child, I am trying to find different recipes to get some nutrients into him. Even though he still refuses (he is a very picky eater!).

I actually made these recipes last year, but I don’t think everyone got to see that post over on my beauty blog. So I am re-posting because a lot of you really enjoyed this and I thought I could give you guys some ideas for a healthy breakfast. Last year I did have a bagel or toast on the side but I found that the smoothies fill me up on their own, so no need to have anything extra on the side.

I used my Travel Bottle from Zero Degrees!

With the exception of one smoothie, all of these were made with fresh and/or frozen fruit as I saw fit. I did include the recipes below for anyone who would like to try them. They’re super easy to prep and make-ahead. Just blend everything the morning of.

For the base of each smoothie you can choose from yogurt, juice, milk or tea. I chose 1/2 cup of rice milk and 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt for a nice balance of creamy and liquid. Just remember you can use whatever you want on yours.

Note: I prepped these in advance and froze them in ziploc bags. These recipes are originally from Ziploc on Pinterest. I do not take credit for these recipes. Just wanted to share.

Let’s get started and let me show you which ones I made and what I thought of each one.

Day 1: Green Monster

Day1_GreenMonster

Ingredients:

  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 cup Pineapple
  • 1 cup Spinach
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

This was one of my least favorite and an unfortunate start to the week, lol. I think it was the grapefruit that ruined it for me. Also, the blender I have (the Ninja blender) didn’t blend the grapefruit properly so there were chunks. Sounds gross, I know. It was tasty at the beginning but the more I drank it, the less I liked it. I think if I make this one again I will either omit or replace the grapefruit with something else.

Day 2: Tropical Treat

Day2_TropicalTreat

Ingredients:

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 C Strawberries
  • 1/2 C Mango — 1 Kiwi
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

I used kiwi instead of mango because I only had one which was enough for the other recipes. I wasn’t sure how different the kiwi would be in this smoothie but it was extremely delicious! I may end up making this smoothie more often; it’s an odd combo, kiwi instead of mango but I’m glad this happened! 🙂 I tasted the kiwi’s distinct flavor but it didn’t overpower the strawberries and banana.

Day 3: Berry Blast

Day3_BerryBlast

Ingredients:

  • 1 C Raspberries
  • 1 C Blueberries
  • 1 C Strawberries
  • 1 C Spinach
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

I didn’t thaw this one out as much, so it was extremely thick and had to add more milk to thin it out. I’ve had smoothies like this one before so it was nothing new to me but still delicious. I did enjoy the blend of three berries.

Day 4: Pineapple Punch

Day4_PineapplePunch

Ingredients:

  • 1 C Raspberries
  • 1 1/2 C Pineapple
  • 1 C Mango
  • 1/2 Banana
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

Another smoothie I had to add more milk to thin out. This one was very refreshing and surprisingly light. I really liked how the pineapple and mango flavors came through. I also thought this one had a nice color. This one goes into my favorites list for sure.

Day 5 : Sweet Sunrise

Day5_SweetSunrise

Ingredients:

  • 1 C Raspberries
  • 1 Orange
  • 1/2 Banana
  • 1 C Mango
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

This one was also really delicious, but my blender didn’t blend the orange correctly. I think it might be the shape of the blender, it’s more squared at the bottom. Anyway, this one was tasty, I loved the subtle citrus flavors mixed with the tartness of the raspberries and the mango. As with Green Monster, I might omit or replace the orange with something else. Maybe I’ll use orange juice and omit my base entirely and make it vegan.

Day 6: Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana

Day6_ChocPBBanana

This is the only non-fruity smoothie in the entire week.
Recipe is from
The Complete Herbal Guide

Ingredients:

  • 2 large overripe bananas, peeled, sliced and frozen*
  • 1 C Original Almond Milk
  • 3/4 C ice
  • 1/4 C Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 2 tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

I found this recipe way before the rest in this post, and thought it would be a good one for CL since I’m trying so hard to get him to eat new foods. Smoothies is one way I could try to get some fruits and veggies into him so I made this one for him to try. Sadly, he didn’t like it much because it tasted too much like bananas, which is baffling because he likes* bananas? Anyway, I loved it and it’s not overly sweet. The sweetness mostly comes from the bananas so the riper the better if that’s your thing.

Day 7: Kiwi Refresh

Day7_KiwiRefresh

Ingredients:

  • 1 Kiwi
  • 1 1/2 C Watermelon
  • 1 1/2 C Grapes (I used green)
  • BASE: 1/2 C Rice Milk & 1/2 C Vanilla Yogurt

Another of my least favorites. I left this one to thaw more time than I meant to so I think I made the mistake of fully thawing it because the watermelon released so much water and I added my base too. The result was a watery smoothie. In hindsight, I probably should have made this one first. The grapes didn’t blend well either like the orange and grapefruit so there were chunks in this one too. I did like the taste of this one but might have to tweak the recipe a bit to my liking.

So that is it! If you guys like smoothies I hope you give some of these a try and let me know if they were a hit or not. I have been looking for more recipes for round 2 this year and I also would like to make aguas frescas to have something refreshing when it gets too hot outside. I also have plenty of other ideas of making more healthy breakfasts in the summer so perhaps I will be sharing plenty of those things here this season.

Do you guys like smoothies? If yes, which is your favorite?
If not, what do you typically do for breakfast?

    1. You and I are very similar when it comes to that. I highly prefer fresh fruits for smoothies. They are just so delicious. I want to try and experiment with other smoothie recipes this summer 🙂
